Freelancing and Finding Gig Work Online

Technology offers older adults a gateway to the world of freelance and gig work. With internet connection available at most cafés, restaurants, libraries and other public spaces — often for free — you have the option to work from virtually anywhere.

According to the ADP Research Institute, nearly a third of independent contractors (workers who receive Form 1099-MISC) are over 55. What’s more, their vast experience puts older adults in a unique position as critical components of the workforce.

Even if you’ve never looked for employment online, AARP Foundation and Chase can help. These four lessons will teach you how to use technology to find gig or freelance work:

  • Get Started

Scroll to the bottom of this page to watch a short introductory video about how to find freelance work.

Once you finish the video, you can begin this workshop by clicking on Lesson 1.

  • Track Your Progress

As you move through each lesson, a red progress bar on the right will tell you how much of the content you have completed. You can use the up or down arrows on the red bar to jump between sections within a lesson.

  • Test
    Yourself

At the end of each lesson, be sure to take the brief quiz at the bottom of the page. Each quiz has three basic questions designed to summarize the material. Use the “Next” button to advance to a lesson.

Gig Work is for All Ages

Twenty percent of gig workers are over the age of 55.

Older Gig Workers Do What They Love

When making employment decisions, workers over 55 prioritize doing what they enjoy over other factors, like income and benefits.
