Lesson 1: Using video platforms to stay connected

By using platforms like Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp, FaceTime or Google Hangouts, you can see the smiling faces of your family and friends even though you may be in different cities or unable to see each other in person. It’s also a great way to connect with doctors or service providers.

Take time to connect one-to-one, or join groups of friends for a virtual celebration, reunion or check-in.

To get started with a video chat platform like Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp, FaceTime or Google Hangouts, first open your smartphone or tablet and visit an application store. If you use an Apple iPhone or iPad, go to the App Store to get the desired video chat app.

For Android smartphone and tablet users, go to the Google Play store. From there, you’ll want to download the app , then tap the app to begin the login process. Alternatively, you can video chat on your laptop or desktop computer.

  • Step 1

Download the video chat platform to your device. On a smartphone or tablet, follow the proper steps for downloading any app. On your laptop or desktop computer, use a search engine like Google or Bing to find the video chat platform’s website, where you can download the platform to your computer.

  • Step 2

Follow the setup steps as prompted by the platform once the download is complete. For video chatting, the most important items to “allow” or “approve” during setup are access to your device’s video and audio. You typically can also choose in the setup steps whether or not to have the app automatically search for and connect you with known friends and family.

  • Step 3

Reach out to trusted friends and family to share the platform you are on and your username.

  • Step 4

Schedule a video chat with a loved one in the same way you would have met up for lunch or coffee. Give yourself plenty of time to log in and try not to get frustrated if the first few times require a couple of attempts to log in and situate your video and audio smoothly. Practice makes perfect!

  • Step 5

Once you are comfortable with one-to-one video chats, explore the functions for group calls and get together virtually with family or friends for a birthday celebration, holiday or even a fun game night.
